For those that don’t know, Lim Hokkien Fried Mee is actually related to the popular Kim’s Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee as both the owners are brothers. Previously owned by Mr Tan Kue Lim, Lim Hokkien Fried Mee is now helmed by his son, who has taken over the reins.

As mentioned, what makes them stand out is their unique ingredient – crispy ikan bilis. Mr Lim decided to serve it with their noodles over 26 years ago due to the inflation of prices, In turn, he decided to give back to his customers by adding ikan bilis to his hokkien mee. Glad to see it has stuck even to this day!

Offering prices of $5, $6, $10, and $12, we went with the smallest serving and yet they did not skimp out on the ingredients. The Hokkien Mee ($5) is served with a generous portion of noodles, prawns, squid, pork belly, fishcake, pork lard, and ikan billis. With the aroma of the noodles, pork lard, and ikan bilis, it makes the dish incredibly fragrant, hitting you as soon as it arrives on your table.

In between the wet and dry versions, the noodles are perfectly cooked, with each strand coated in the flavourful broth. Although flavourful, the noodles sadly lacked wok hei which would have helped elevate it further.

For some zing and acidity, be sure to squeeze some of the lime into your noodles for a good balance of flavours. Additionally, the chilli adds a delightful burst of sweetness, spice, and tang to give the dish a little more oomph.

The prawns and squid are pretty decent, with the ikan bilis and pork lard being the highlights. The ikan bilis adds an amazing crunch and pairs perfectly with the chewy noodles. On top of that, it adds a pleasant layer of umami that you don’t typically taste in hokkien mee, making it truly unique! As for the pork lard, it is fried to perfection, giving it a nice crispy exterior before melting beautifully with each bite.
