A humble hawker stall at the popular Bedok 85 Food Centre, Shanghai Xiao Long Bao offers a wide variety of noodles ranging from Zha Jiang Mian ($4) and Pork Ribs Noodles ($4.50) to Chicken Chop Noodles ($4.50).

Not forgetting their handmade dumplings, select from your classic Xiao Long Bao, Steamed Dumplings ($5 for 9pcs), or their Pan-Fried Dumplings ($5 for 9pcs), also known as Guo Tie.

Compared to the Xiao Long Bao you typically get outside, the ones here are much bigger! Although the skin is slightly thicker than normal, the generous amount of soup and filling of minced pork definitely makes up for it.

The soup is light yet flavourful and the minced pork is well-seasoned, making it still pretty tasty overall. For a delightful pairing, dip it into the vinegar for an extra burst of acidity to lift the flavours.

If you’re looking for something that’s tasty and value for money, be sure to go for the Pan-Fried Dumplings. The exterior is crispy yet not too oily, and the thickness of the skin absolutely perfect.

The filling of the minced pork is really flavourful and the chives add a pleasant layer of crunch to each bite. Additionally, the char on the outside gives a slight smokiness to the dumplings which helps to elevate them.
