Ikan Bakar is a lesser-known Malay dish but it is one of the tastiest. It’s sweet, smoky, savoury, spicy, succulent- it has it all. And at Noi Kassim BBQ you will definitely get the very best version of it. They have been serving this dish for up to 10 years now, and show no signs of slowing down. The smoky flavour is prevalent in almost all their dishes, giving you a BBQ Vibe without having to pull out a grill!

Opened in 2011, Noi Kassim has been serving delicious BBQ dishes non-stop. They have made a few alterations to their original recipe and have remained consistent throughout the years. To this day, they continue to serve traditional Malay/Muslim dishes. Not many know, but the original owners of Noi Kassim originally had a stall at the MediaCorp food court for 20 years. It is safe to say they have plenty of experience in the food game here in Singapore.

Their rise to fame is likely due to their amazing BBQ Seafood. They use fresh fish cooked right in front of you. As you walk up to the store, you will be overwhelmed by the rich and spicy scent of Sambal- followed shortly by the smoky, barbecue smell. Not only is the food tremendous, but the service is great as well. The staff are kind and welcoming, giving their recommendations and ensuring that your experience is just as good as the food.

Spicy And Smoky Ikan Bakar

Their Ikan Bakar ($16) is their most popular dish for a reason. It includes two generous pieces of grilled stingray, seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. It is then topped with their sweet and spicy Sambal sauce. The meat is unbelievably tender and flakes of the skin with ease. The charred parts of the stingray add smokiness and a pleasant change of flavour. The Sambal sauce compliments the stingray amazingly, rounding off the dish with sweetness and a slight spice to it. This dish is a must-try for sure!

What many people do not know, however, is that their Nasi Goreng is also scrumptious. We suggest getting the Nasi Goreng Thai ($6) along with the Ikan Bakar. This dish is what you’d expect and more from Thai Fried Rice. It has all the smokiness from their barbecued meats but with the added tangy and spicy flavour. This dish perfectly balances out the sweet and rich flavours of the Ikan Bakar.
