The 96-year-old is succeeded by three sons and three daughters with his late wife, all of whom have descendants of their own. Following in his footsteps, his son Pang Tee Chew currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer and director of the company. His grandson Pierre Pang is now group CEO.

Founded in 1971, Mr Pang was then a second-hand car dealer when he decided to start a small factory in Malacca that manufactured instant noodles.

In 1972, they launched their first product, Lucky Instant Noodle. However, it wasn’t a hit. Then in 1974, Tee Chew got the idea to sell ready-cooked instant noodles with added flavouring. He thought of this after seeing rural farm workers eating uncooked instant noodles straight from the packet.

He named the snack Mamee. It quickly became a huge hit among Malaysians and Singaporeans. Fuelled by the success of Mamee, the company didn’t stop at one product. They changed their name to Mamee-Double Decker in 1992 and produced more than 50 brands of snacks.

The company is also behind the Mister Potato range of potato chips.

In 2014, Mamee-Double Decker won the Frost & Sullivan Award for Best Home-Grown Packages Food Company, and the Putra Brand Award under the Foodstuff Category for being the top 10 best instant noodles in the world.

Mr Pang himself went on to win the Putra Brand Personality Award, awarded by brand managers and owners, in 2016. A more recent and notable win for the company is clinching the title of One of Malaysia’s Best Managed Companies awarded by Deloitte.

The team at Singapore Foodie sends our deepest condolences to Mr Pang’s family and friends. May his legacy live on through his iconic snacks.
