Fun fact, the founder, Mr Yeo, used to sell his noodles from a pushcart outside Chongzheng Primary School in Tampines. He came to Singapore from Sarawak to escape the war. The stall then moved to Golden Mile Food Centre in the 1970s and is now run by second and third-generation Yeos.

Chung Cheng received the “Michelin Plate” status in the Singapore Michelin Guide 2019. This is in recognition of eateries that have yet to earn their Bid Gourmand or Michelin Star. Don’t worry, this doesn’t disparage the fact that Chung Cheng still serves one delicious bowl of Chilli Mee.

Chung Cheng’s signature Chilli Mee is served in two options: $4.50 and $5.50. The $4.50 bowl is served with prawns, tau pok, fish cakes, and slices of hard-boiled egg. The $5 version is a step up with pork ribs and extra prawns. For the noodles, there is an array of selections you can choose from. Options include yellow noodles, mee pok, mee kia, kway teow, and thin and thick bee hoon.

Signature Chilli Sauce

After the noodles are cooked, a generous amount of chilli sauce is scooped and your noodles are simply drowned in it. The signature chilli sauce is made with dried shrimps, belacan, garlic, and onions. Additionally, secret spices are added, making the chilli sauce one of a kind.

For those who can’t really handle their spice, don’t worry, the chilli is more of a mixture between satay bee hoon gravy and belacan sauce. With it being more on the savoury side, the chilli doesn’t overpower the taste of the ingredients. This makes every bite flavourful, yet with a kick of spice. Simply delicious!

The pork ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and marinated with 13 special spices and slow-cooked for several hours. As for the soup, you might be thinking it’ll probably taste like the ones you get with prawn mee. Instead, it has a rich herbal sweetness with hints of pepper.
