For several years, Ah Boy Chicken Rice has been perfecting their recipe and serving their dishes at affordable prices, with one plate of chicken rice starting from a mere $3.60. It became popular in 2017 when celebrity chef Eric Teo raved about it on his Facebook page. When the lunch or dinner crowd comes, the queue can stretch up to ten people, but it moves rather quickly.
Top-Notch Chicken Rice!
We got their Roasted Chicken Rice and Steamed Chicken Rice, both priced at $3.60. The rice is fragrant and not too greasy, providing a solid base for the chicken. However, a fluffier, softer texture would have further elevated the dish.
The roasted chicken has flavourful and slightly crispy skin while the steamed chicken skin boasts a tender, gelatinous texture. Surprisingly, the typically challenging-to-cook breast meat achieved a succulent and tender mouthfeel, though a touch more juiciness would have been appreciated. A side of their in-house chilli introduces a slight kick, giving it another dimension of flavour.
Adding a unique twist, their inclusion of achar (pickled vegetables) instead of the conventional cucumbers provided a sweet, salty, and tangy balance, offering a refreshing contrast to the light chicken rice. Setting itself apart from its competitors, the soup is served with some lettuce and tomatoes as well. Brimming with the essence of chicken, each spoonful leaves a lingering desire for more.
