Epok-Epok is Singapore’s most iconic snack. In every corner of this country, you will find yourself a store that sells Epok-Epok. From mini-marts to high-end restaurants, you will get a taste of it. But what makes an Epok-Epok special? The ingredients? Or perhaps the history? At Yang’s Epok-Epok, it’s both. Their Epok-Epok is made using traditional methods, quality ingredients, and lots of love!
Fantastic Epok-Epok At Bedok Food Centre
Their stall has been running since 1993, originally serving Nasi Padang but eventually made the switch to Epok-Epok as they found that people don’t often have the time to sit down and enjoy their meals anymore.
Now they continue to make Epok-Epok for the locals and show no signs of slowing down. If you were to ask any Makcik or Pakcik in Singapore where to find the best Epok-Epok, chances are they’ll recommend Yang’s Epok Epok.
If you were to visit Yang’s Epok-Epok, you would likely find one of her family members preparing the snack! Due to their popularity, they are constantly making more Epok-Epok each minute. Apparently, according to Ms Yang- they will continue to make Epok-Epok throughout the day with only a few minutes of break at a time. That is some true dedication. It is no wonder why they are so popular!
Yang’s Epok-Epok Sardine ($0.60 Per Pc)
The Epok-Epok sardine is a very difficult snack to get right. The sardine tends to either overpower or be completely unrecognisable due to the sambal sauce. But Yang’s has been honing their Epok-Epok recipe, balancing the flavours perfectly.
Their Epok-Epok Sardine has a buttery and flaky crust, filled full of their Sardine filling which consists of onions, chilli sauce, Sambal and canned sardines. The Epok-Epok itself is sweet, tangy and slightly spicy. A perfect snack that packs a punch!
Yang’s Epok-Epok Potato ($0.60 Per Pc)
The most iconic Epok-Epok is the Potato Epok-Epok. When you think of Epok-Epok, this is what you’d be imagining. At Yang’s, their Epok-Epok is amazingly fragrant, rich and slightly sweet from the curry. This is the first item they sold after making the switch from Nasi Padang. And now, it continues to be their most popular item.
Their Potato Epok-Epok has a flaky buttery crust. Its ‘crimp’ is also different from the Sardine Epok-Epok so they do not rely on coloured markers to mark their Epok-Epok- which is a common practice by most Epok-Epok makers. It is filled with a curry potato mixture and then fried. The curry is fragrant, rich and also very savoury. The potatoes are similar to mashed potatoes in how fluffy they are. Once you take a bite, you won’t want to stop!
