Established in 2019, Greatwall Chicken Rice has certainly overcome great adversities. From starting right in the midst of COVID-19, they have now become a popular chicken rice spot in Toa Payoh, drawing queues as soon as they open. Owned by Vanessa Tan, she decided to open Greatwall out of her own love for chicken rice.

What makes Greatwall stand out are their Chicken Rice Balls, an offering that’s not commonly found in Singapore. As their head chef is Malaysian, Vanessa took the opportunity to add them to her menu.

Another unique offering, which is also Vanessa’s favourite, is the Chicken Cutlet that’s served with chicken rice as well. On top of that, Greatwall also doesn’t charge extra for their takeaway box! Enjoy your tasty meal in the comfort of your home with no additional charge, unless you’re taking away the soup.

Their Rice Ball Chicken Rice is served with three chicken rice balls and your choice of chicken – Steamed or Roasted. Similar to Lor Mai Gai, the chicken rice is mixed with a small serving of glutinous rice to give its sticky texture.

Although the rice is flavourful and fluffy, it lacks the glistening from the chicken oil, making it a tad dry as well. However, this could appeal to the more health-conscious individuals. You can also add on more rice balls for $0.80 each.

Opting for the Steamed Chicken, the meat is tender and has a pleasantly silky smooth skin. Though flavourful, the flavours are cleaner and on the lighter side like most steamed white chicken. To give it more depth, simply dunk it into the “chicken sauce” that the meat is swimming in.

An important component of any chicken rice, the chilli has a slight sharpness and tanginess with a good kick of heat to it. For those that can’t handle their spice, rest assured you won’t need to reach for water when eating it.

The Roast Chicken however is where the flavour truly comes in. As the skin is already marinated, each bite of the juicy chicken is bursting with flavour. Although some might find it slightly salty, pairing it with the rice helps neutralise and balance the flavours.

For something more indulgent, the Chicken Cutlet Rice is served with crispy and succulent chicken that’s well-battered with the perfect amount of seasoning. Additionally, the batter is slightly tangy, giving it an intriguing and unique flavour profile.

Choose between three sauces – Mayonnaise, Lemon, and Thai Chilli. The mayo adds creaminess while the lemon sauce hits you with a layer of tanginess and the Thai chilli sauce offers sweetness and a slight kick of heat.
