Opened in February 2021, Curry On is owned by Mr Wan, a former hotel chef. Specializing in turmeric curry rice, Mr Wan incorporates turmeric, lemongrass, and galangal into most of his dishes. There’s even a signboard on display highlighting the health benefits of these ingredients, letting customers know they are not just used for flavouring.

Dishes are served with mouth-watering meats like barbecued spare ribs, chicken, mutton and beef rendang, giving meat lovers plenty to enjoy. For those who prefer noodles, the stall also offers Tumeric Laksa, a dish that you certainly don’t see very often at hawker centres.

The BBQ Chicken with Turmeric Curry Rice ($5.80) is served with a generous array of ingredients including egg otah, ikan billis and peanuts, pineapple cubes, and a side of cucumbers and shredded carrots. The rice is fluffy and aromatic, with a slight turmeric taste to it. The turmeric is definitely more prominent in the curry and there’s the familiar taste of laksa that blends together perfectly, making its flavour really unique!

Similar to your typical char siew, the chicken is glazed with an addictive sweet sauce and then barbecued. The meat is tender and succulent while the sweet sauce isn’t too overpowering, ensuring it doesn’t get jelak. As some slices have a slight char, the bitterness is a good contrast to the sweet sauce. Additionally, the pineapple adds sweetness and acidity, helping to cut through some of the sauce and oiliness of the chicken as well.

Another item that definitely stands out is the egg otah as it has an incredible creamy texture and melts beautifully with each bite. Topped with a layer of chilli, it adds a touch of spice that blends well with the flavour of the otah. Alternatively, you can also pair it with the rice and chicken to give it some heat. On top of that, the peanuts and ikan billis give the dish delightful layers of crunch and umami.
