Newton Food Centre is one of Singapore’s many iconic food centres. If you’ve watched the movie Crazy Rich Asians, you may have noticed one of the scenes featuring this place! It houses over 100 stalls, so the you’ll definitely be spoilt for choices. But fret not, we’ve complied a list of 9 things you have to try while you’re there!

Hup Kee‘s Oyster Omelettes are known for being extra eggy and starchy. You’ll find that their oysters are exceptionally juicy as well! It’ll be easy for you to spot the shop; just look for the oyster omelette store with a long queue. We promise the wait will be worth it!

Sambal Stingray is a must-order sharing dish when dining at Newton Food Centre! The stingray itself is silky soft and will practically melt in your mouth! The sambal it’s paired with has a fiery, smoky taste sure to make you weak in the knees. We also recommend you to try Alliance Seafood‘s black pepper crab!

If you’re at Newton for a round of supper and drinks with your friends, check out TKR Yummy Chicken Wing! Satay & Chicken Wings make a perfect snack to have alongside cold beer. Or, you could pair them with rice and make it a meal! Either way, these are simply delightful.

You can find all sorts of local delicacies at Newton Food Centre, including dessert featuring the king of fruits, Durian! However, we have to admit their dessert options are rather indulgent, so only go for it if you have extra room after your meal!

5. Carrot Cake – Heng Carrot Cake

Heng Carrot Cake steams their carrot cake in-store before frying them in a wok. We’ve found that pairing it with chilli makes it taste more complete! You don’t have to worry about these being dry – using the word “moist” to describe their carrot cake would be an understatement!

6. Fishball Noodles – Soon Wah

It may seem like all the options in the list so far are heavier on the palette, so here’s something light for a change!  Soon Wah’s fishballs are handmade, and hence have a unique bouncy texture. This is the ultimate comfort food. What more can we say? Fishballs and piping hot soup are a match made in heaven.

7. Duck Delights – Kwee Heng

Kwee Heng specialises in Duck dishes. You may order it with soup, noodles or even have it on its own! You can almost smell the distinct aroma it has from a mile away! Some have commented that their soup is more on the sweet side, but this is subjective.

8. Popiah – Bee Heng

Are you really a fan of Popiah if you haven’t tried Bee Heng’s? Their popiah is packed with flavour (especially their spicy ones!) and is sure to leave you wanting more. However, it is honestly a little on the pricier side. Whether it’s worth it is up to you, but it’s something you have to try at least once!

Finally, a drink to wash it all down! If there’s one drink you must get at Newton Food Centre, it’s sugar cane. It’s made fresh and naturally sweet & light; you just can’t go wrong with this. There are multiple drink stalls selling this, so we’ll leave it up to you to decide which to get. (They’re probably all good anyway!)
