Are you struggling to find delicious, vegetarian dishes? Or maybe you want to take a break from meat in general for health reasons. Well, look no further! Kopi Village at Katong Shopping Centre serves some of the best vegetarian dishes here in Singapore! You will find iconic dishes like Bak Kut Teh, made completely vegetarian.
Vegetarian Stall At Katong Shopping Centre
This humble stall is located at the center of Katong Shopping Centre, surrounded by many different food stalls. However, what sets them apart is that they’re completely vegetarian! With dishes that are normally savoury, they serve vegetarian dishes that are deceptively meaty. Each dish is cooked fresh right in front of you. Also, they source their ingredients with great care and take note that each item is of the highest quality. This is likely the reason each dish is so delicious!
Chef Ah Ru according to the owner Collin, is very picky when it comes to her food! The chef is a vegetarian and understands how hard it is to find quality Chinese vegetarian dishes. Also, they don’t use garlic or onion either! Her skills were passed down by her late father-in-law who was a Zi Char head chef. She was thought well as each dish is prepared quickly and efficiently. Also, Collin mentions that their menu creation was based on years of trial and error! Constantly checking with the customer if they want eggs in their dishes is a must when ordering. Both the Chef and the Owner deeply care for their customers as well as their food.
Beautifully Flavourful Signature Dish
Their signature dish according to the owner, is their Hong Shao Dry Noodles! It features Mee Pok, crunchy crackers, succulent “Char Siew” meat and a sweet and savoury sauce! The chef prepares this dish with speed and precision. She starts by frying the “Char Siew” whilst preparing a blend of different sauces- all while boiling the noodles. In a blink of an eye, the dish is prepared almost instantly. The sauce clings onto the noodles, flavouring each bite nicely.
The Hong Shao Dry Noodles Set ($6.00) is an amazing dish. Each part of this dish is necessary to complete your meal. The ‘meat’ is the most surprising part! Not only does the bite seem very meaty, but the Umami quality also adds to it as well. The noodles are cooked to perfection and carry the secret recipe sauce amazingly. The Zai er are out-of-this-world! It adds texture and flavour to this dish. The Zai er is so popular, that many customers often try to buy just the Zai er alone. However, they have mentioned that they no longer sell these crackers on their own due to how fast it runs out!
More Delicious Vegetarian Dishes
Need something light for lunch to help you re-energize? Their Fish Soup Bee Hoon Set ($5.50) is the perfect dish to do just that. Despite not having any fish, it still has that iconic fishy flavour that makes the soup so delicious. The different components such as the mushrooms, vegetables and “Fried Fish” elevates this dish superbly! Paired with a side of rice to soak up all that soupy goodness and you’ve got yourself the ultimate lunch!
Wanted to taste an iconic Chinese dish, Bak Kut Teh, without the meat? Well, this version of Bak Kut Teh ($6.50) is for you! It still has that earthy, almost medicinal-like flavour but with none of the meat. It is filled to the brim with delicious mushrooms that give the dish a ‘meaty’ quality. The soup is warming and soothing to the soul. One spoonful, and you’ll have more than enough energy to continue your busy day.
Their Kway Chap ($5.50) is a must-try. Unlike your regular Kway Chap, they have a thicker, much darker sauce. The noodles are silky and smooth which carry the sauce with each bite. It also features sides of different “meats”.
And last but not least, their Vegetarian Mala Xiang Guo ($10.40)! This dish uses traditional ingredients and techniques. They also simmer the ingredients before cooking them off with the Mala sauce blend to “wake it up”. This one detail adds a surprisingly essential quality! The spice level is set to their level, where it is not too spicy, but maintains the numbing sensation. The mushrooms are incredibly meaty and delicious. Get this with a bowl of rice, are you are all set!
Delicious Kopi Village Signature Drinks
Another amazing part of Kopi Village is their awesome drink selections! Their most iconic has to be their on-site brew of almond milk ($2.70 Cold, $2.20 Hot). Not only is Almond milk good for the complexion, but also good for sore throat and overall wellness. Also, their Teh Halia ($3.30 Cold, $2.70 Hot) is another crowd favourite. The Barista can adjust the sweetness and the ginger spiciness according to the customer’s preference. Lastly, their famous Sea Salt Lemon ($2.50) is another unique and refreshing drink. Its flavour is a combination of sweetness and saltiness. All these drinks pair nicely with every dish they have, so try out different combos!
