Established in 1956, Boon Lay Fried Carrot Cake & Kway Teow Mee is run by a husband-and-wife duo and continues drawing crowds for their popular fried carrot cake to this day. Not only that, but they also serve a tasty char kway teow as well. Although the stall offers both the white and black versions of their fried carrot cake, it is the latter that definitely has customers coming back for more.
The Fried Carrot Cake is served at wallet-friendly prices of $3, $4, and $5, making it a bang for your buck. For the black version, the radish cubes are cooked well, giving them a nice crispy bite. As for the chai poh, it helps add a pleasant savouriness to the dish.
Each bite is filled with amazing wok hei, giving an incredible smokiness that’s seriously addictive. This is something not all fried carrot cake stalls have managed to execute well, making this spot stand out from the rest. Additionally, the balance between the flavours is achieved beautifully, with a kick of spice to help lift the dish.
