Hidden Gem At West Coast
A hidden gem at Ayer Rajah Food Centre, Adam Chicken is one of the more popular Muslim stalls at the hawker centre, drawing long lines during the lunch hour. Serving two main dishes – Roasted Chicken Rice ($4.50/$6.50) and Ayam Penyet ($6.50), a unique offering they have here is that you can pair your chicken with Nasi Goreng, instead of the usual rice served.
The Nasi Goreng Ayam Penyet ($7.50) is served with a pretty decent portion, with the nasi goreng being in-between your Chinese and Malay-style fried rice. Incredibly comforting, each grain of rice is coated with a thin layer of oil that makes it sinful, yet delightfully indulgent.
As for the ayam penyet, the huge chicken thigh is fried to a beautiful golden brown, giving it a delightfully crispy exterior. Seasoned well, each bite is bursting with flavour. Unfortunately, one letdown is that the chicken is slightly dry and served without the crispy bits.
An important component of the dish, the chilli seriously packs a punch and adds a beautiful layer of umami. Although it packs quite a lot of heat, they certainly did not skimp out on the serving, something spice lovers will certainly appreciate. Working as a palate cleanser, the soup is light but slightly salty.
