Good news for all you cafe-hoppers, a new Scandinavian-inspired cafe, Kaeden Cafe has recently opened at Aperia Mall serving up French cuisines with Spanish and Japanese influences. Enjoy amazing dishes such as their Chicken Karaage, Grilled Mentaiko Prawns, and Shakshuka for one satisfying meal!
Kaeden Cafe At Bendemeer
Meaning chain in Danish, the owners named the cafe Kaeden as they wanted to bring together Scandinavian influences with their love for cycling. Even their cafe’s logo is a chain shaped like a bike! The interior of the cafe is decked in wooden furniture and shades of white, giving it a modest and rustic aesthetic.
Their chef is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and has had internships in France and also local restaurants such as Odette and Binomio. Offering different menus throughout the day, starters are available all day while brunch is served from 11am to 5.30pm, and dinner from 5.30pm to closing.
Chicken Karaage ($14)
A classic Japanese side dish, Kaeden’s Chicken Karaage is definitely a must-have! The exterior is incredibly crispy and remains so even after being left out for a significant period. As for the meat, it is succulent and flavourful, with the beautiful juices oozing out with each bite.
Drizzled with Japanese mayo and chilli oil with a sprinkle of fried garlic, the mayo adds a pleasant tang while cutting through the richness of the chicken. It does however overpower the garlic and chilli oil, allowing you to only taste the crispiness of the garlic. Additionally, it’s also lighter than your usual karaage, making it the perfect appetiser to enjoy before digging into your mains!
Mentaiko-Grilled Prawns ($4 Per Prawn)
Another must-try, the Mentaiko Prawns are executed to perfection. The prawns are seriously fresh and have the perfect bite to them. Paired with mentaiko sauce, each bite is a delightful burst of mentaiko goodness, with incredible smokiness coming through at the end. This allows you to enjoy the full flavour of the mentaiko sauce first, something all you mentaiko lovers will certainly appreciate!
Shakshuka ($22)
For those who have never tried Shakshuka, it is a Maghrebi dish of eggs poached in tomato sauce, olive oil, and peppers, with onion and garlic. Unfortunately for Kaeden’s Shakshuka ($22), it was a slight letdown as it simply tasted like tomato stew with eggs. The bell peppers did however add sweetness and acidity while the baked eggs gave richness to the dish.
Customers also have the option to choose between lamb merguez sausage and halloumi cheese to be added in. The sausage gave a pleasant savouriness and tang, elevating the flavours of the shakshuka. One improvement would be to have the sausages in mini slices, allowing you to taste them in each bite as it is pretty one-dimensional without it.
Additionally, a side of sourdough bread is served, allowing you to soak up all that flavour. As shakshuka is commonly spiced with cumin, paprika and cayenne pepper, the dish is supposed to have bold flavours, whereas Kaeden’s sadly misses the mark.
