If you’re a fan of all things Matcha, then this new Japanese cafe at Clarke Quay is just the spot to check out. With four outlets in Fukuoka, Japan, Hachi Cafe opened its first international outlet last year right here in Singapore. As there’s always room for dessert, enjoy their array of amazing matcha delights like Basque Cheesecakes, Parfaits, and Affogatos for the perfect end to your meal!
Hachi Cafe At Clarke Quay
The design of Hachi Cafe takes on a modern kissaten, an old-school Japanese-style tearoom and coffeehouse, giving off rustic and nostalgic vibes. As for the interior, the cafe is decked in concrete walls and solid mahogany wood with warm ambient lighting. Cafe Hachi prepares all of its matcha drinks and desserts with high-quality matcha powder, using 100% Uji tea leaves grown in Wazuka, Kyoto Prefecture.
Three grades of ceremonial matcha are offered here, from the mildest to the strongest, varying in aroma and intensity. Choose from: Okumidori ($6.90++), Samidori ($10.90++) and Asahi ($14.90++). Hachi Cafe uses Okumidori in making their matcha desserts as it has the strongest aroma and most bitter aftertaste, giving a beautiful balance of sweetness and bitterness to them.
Matcha Basque Cheesecake ($8.80)
Unlike your typical basque cheesecakes, the Matcha Basque Cheesecake here is incredibly creamy and thick, making it a pretty heavy dish that’s best shared. Each bite gives you a delightful flavour of the cheesecake, with a slight bitterness from the matcha and caramelized exterior. The flavours are incredibly well-balanced, giving this sweet treat an amazingly distinct flavour of its own.
Matcha Tall Parfait ($18.80)
Containing several layers, each bite of this sweet treat is a delightful surprise! At the top, there is a scoop of matcha ice cream that has a beautiful balance of sweetness and bitterness. There is also a layer of cream, Azuki red beans, dango, chestnuts, and a delightful matcha chocolate cube that melts beautifully in your mouth. The middle layer consists of matcha chocolate and Genmaicha (brown rice cracker bits) that give an extra crunch and taste that’s reminiscent of popcorn. Additionally, it helps to balance out the matcha, giving a good contrast of flavours.
Up next is a layer of matcha chiffon cake with matcha ice cream, which does get a tad soggy as the ice cream melts after a while. There is also Matcha Warabimochi to give that irresistible chewy texture that mochi lovers will definitely enjoy. Lastly, the bottom layer is filled with panna cotta, matcha pudding and white wine jelly. Each layer brings different dimensions of flavours and textures, ensuring you won’t get jelak of this amazing dessert!
Matcha Affogato ($15.80)
Served with vanilla ice cream and a luscious matcha sauce, it adds an amazing contrast of bitterness to the sweet ice cream, with a hint of the matcha flavour at the end. As the matcha gets a little heavy after a while, allowing the vanilla ice cream to shine through was a good choice on their part. Additionally, red bean and matcha cornflakes are served alongside, elevating the dish with added layers of sweetness and textures.
