This Hidden Gem At Toa Payoh Draws Crowds For Their Awesome Fried Carrot Cake

When it comes to Fried Carrot Cake in Toa Payoh, most people will probably think of the popular Chey Sua Carrot Cake. However, not too many stalls down from them lies 26 Carrot Cake, a hidden gem that’s also worthy of joining in the reigns.

A popular breakfast spot with over 40 years of history, 26 Carrot Cake is currently run by Mr Ng, the third-generation owner who took over his family’s legacy from his father. Despite being situated near Chey Sua Carrot Cake, that hasn’t stopped their steady stream of customers daily, sometimes selling out as early as 11am.

Serving up only one dish, their Fried Carrot Cake is served at prices of $3, $4, and $5. For the best of both worlds, you can also opt for the Yuanyang ($5.50) which offers both the Black and White versions.

Starting with our favourite out of the two, the Black Carrot Cake has a good balance of sweet and savoury, leaning slightly towards the sweeter side. Hitting your tastebuds with an amazing kick of heat, the spice level here is more aggressive compared to others but fret not as you won’t feel the need to reach for a sip of water.

The charred bits add an amazing layer of smokiness and crispiness, elevating each bite. Additionally, the chai poh has a pleasant crunch that pairs well with the chewy radish cubes.

Served in chunks, the White Carrot Cake is cleaner tasting, with the flavour of the radish and chai poh shining through more. It is also not too greasy but is sadly less crispy and spicy as compared to the Black version. For those who prefer lighter flavours, this might be more up your alley.
