Chinese New Year is my personal favorite time of the year! Surrounded by good food, good vibes, friends, and family, there’s nothing more I could ask for. Not forgetting the angbaos, even though they are just getting lesser and lesser as we grow older. But it’s okay because the Chinese New Year snacks always make up for it. Here is a list of the top 10 Chinese New Year goodies we love to munch on at every visiting and gathering!

1. Pineapple Tarts

Pineapple Tarts comes in many shapes, sizes, and forms. It’s that one snack, where you can’t stop at just one. What makes a pineapple tart so good is the perfect balance between the buttery pastry that melts in your mouth and the flavorful pineapple jam filling. Self-control is not in my dictionary when it comes to this bite-sized goodness!

2. Love Letters

Love Letters are brittle, flaky delights that come in the form of either folded up triangular shapes or rolled up tubes. This eggy goodness crumbles in your mouth the moment you bite down. It’s light texture and flavor, with the perfect crunch keeps you going back for more. There have even been alternative versions with a modern twist such as chocolate or strawberry filling, and they’re also Sesame Love Letters!

3. Kueh Bangkit

Kueh Bangkit is light crumbly coconut milk-based cookies that are made with tapioca flour that will just melt in your mouth. Each piece of this creamy snack with blanket your mouth with delicately sweet yet powdery goodness. Although this yummy snack melts away in your mouth extremely quickly and there is barely enough time to savor it, the fragrant coconut flavor lingers around on your tongue.

4. Fried Spicy Shrimp Roll

Fried Spicy Shrimp Rolls are small bite-sized deep-fried rolls that are filled with fragrant Hae Bee Hiam (dried shrimp sambal). This classic Chinese New Year snack is extremely addictive, as it is so crispy and savory! However, remember to take it slow as it can get pretty spicy, pretty quick!

5. Bak Kwa

The most classic Chinese New Year snack! Singaporeans love to eat this sweet yet salty meat jerky all year round, regardless of the time of year. Bak Kwa is relatively thinly sliced meat that is seasoned with spices, sugar, salt and soy sauce which is then barbequed over charcoal for that hint of smoky flavor. Some places have even come up with trendy flavored Bak Kwa such as Mala Bak Kwa!

Kueh Lapis is probably one of the most sinful snacks out of all the Chinese New Year goodies. If you’re going to treat yourself to something so sinful, make sure it’s worth the calories. What makes this multi-layered cake oh so good is it’s buttery, fragrant and dense texture and flavor. Eat it layer by layer, and enjoy every bit of it!

7. Beehive Cookies

Beehive Cookies are also known as Honeycomb Cookies, Kuih Loyang, and Kuih rose. It’s obvious why it is named what it is named, because of it’s unique shape and design. This sweet and savory snack is simple yet extremely addictive! There have been other variations such as Pandan, Cinnamon, Matcha, and even Beetroot as well!

8. Arrowhead Chips

Arrowhead Chips is a thin crispy snack that is mostly eaten during Chinese New Year. It is somewhat a healthier version of normal store-bought chips, with that slight bitterness and distinct flavor from the Arrowhead. Slightly salted and thinly sliced, Arrowhead Chips is the perfect snack to munch on while you avoid annoying questions from your relatives!

9. Fried Crabsticks

Although this might be one of the most simple snacks in this entire list, Fried Crabsticks that come in this form often appears only during the Lunar festive period. It is classic and addictive, well-loved amongst everyone and anyone! Besides that, this Fried Crabstick snack is easy to make at the comfort of your own home.

Simple, crisp, buttery and full of almond flavor, Almond Cookies are the perfect treat for Chinese New Year. It is the go-to snack during visiting, while you catch up with some classic Fanta Orange or Traditional Chinese tea. Extremely fragrant and flavorful, this Chinese New Year snack brings us back to our childhood.
