The hype over Jewel Changi Airport’s grand opening has been unreal over the last month. The various new eateries in Jewel have been all the rage, sporting hour-long queues and large crowds every day of the week. However, if large crowds and long queues aren’t for you, we’ve got your back. We’ve come up with a list of 10 New Dining Destinations, including restaurants, cafes and bars that you may have missed out amidst all the hype over Jewel.

1. Chico Loco

Chico Loco promises “Real Chicken, Real Good”. That is their tagline as they guarantee that they only use chickens that have a 100% natural diet, contain less fat and cholesterol, are logically and ethically farmed, and are cage-, hormone- and antibiotic-free. Plus, no msg is added into their food, so you don’t have to worry about not eating healthy at Chico Loco. This new Mexican joint features spit-roasted chicken, which comes in three sizes – quarter ($9), half ($17) and whole ($32). Other Mexican dishes are also available as sides like guacamole ($5) and handmade flour tortillas ($1 each).

2. Sa Tae Bak

This humble skewer bar is inspired by Japanese-style izakaya bars and they offer affordable food and alcoholic drinks. Some favourites are the enoki bacon ($2.50), succulent chicken thigh and leek ($1.50) and extra chewy rice cake wrapped in bacon ($2). We’ve also heard that the cold tofu with century egg ($3.50) is a crowd favourite, so definitely try that out if you’re thinking of eating there. So why not order up a few skewers and some alcoholic drinks that would pair amazingly with your food?

3. The Tipsy Wolves

Even though they just opened not long ago, they are already known for their high-end Western cuisine at hawker prices. However, you can be sure that the portions are filling, and the quality of the food can be vouched for. Plus, don’t expect your run-of-the-mill western fare here. While they have burgers and fish and chips, they also have dishes that lean more fusion, like the grilled pork belly ($10.90) – a pork belly steak that is sous-vide for 16 hours before being grilled to retain the moisture in the meat, and crayfish laksa pasta ($10.90)!

4. Café de Nicole’s Flower

This café has been garnering plenty of attention because of its beautifully decorated shop and menu items. As the name suggests, the place is filled with flowers, making this café an Instagrammer’s paradise. Not only is the decor flower-themed, the drinks are garnished with real flowers as well! Here, you can get all-day brunch. Nicole’s Favours ($21.90+) consists of sourdough toast, topped with avocado, smoked salmon and pomegranate seeds. It is accompanied by a fried egg, salad, grilled pork sausage and hashbrown strips! Their thick, fluffy soufflé pancakes ($15.90 – $19.90) are also a must-try. Oh, also, they’re pet-friendly, which means that you can bring your little furkids with you!

5. Chef Street

Get affordable and delicious meals here! Offering a variety of local and Asian delights, Chef Street will make sure you leave with your cravings and wallet satisfied. The chicken katsu and ebi fry set ($8.80) feature a big juicy piece of chicken cutlet and crispy deep-fried shrimp heaped on a generous serving of rice. You can also customise the level of spiciness (level 1 to 4) of the curry sauce that they will scoop over your bowl. For a more local flair, they also serve traditional prawn noodles ($5.90) in both the dry and soup varieties!

6. You Kee XO Restaurant

Originally from Johor Bahru, You Kee XO Restaurant has already made a name for itself for its herbal soups and roast meat and they recently opened a restaurant here in Singapore. Their soups are boiled in urns over charcoal for 15 hours in order to produce the rich broth and deep flavour. Two different types of herbal soup will be available every day. However, their signature dish is definitely their perfectly-charred roast duck ($8 – $15.80). Other items on their menu to look out for are their roast pork ($6.80) and their crystal BBQ pork belly char siew ($9.80).

7. White House Teochew Porridge

Miss grandma’s cooking? Then you definitely need to try out White House Teochew Porridge. Here, the food is simple, but made with love. You can get authentic comfort food that will warm your heart (and stomach!). Some recommended dishes are the black bean fish ($6), stir-fried cabbage ($2) and sweet-salty pork belly ($4) to accompany a piping hot bowl of porridge, of course!

8. YakiBaBar

A Yakitori restaurant and a sake bar – need I say more? They have a wide variety of skewers on their menu, and we’ve heard some good reviews about their kurobuta pork belly with konnyaku (3.80). If you are unsure of what to order, you can’t go wrong with their yakitori set of 5 ($13.80), which includes chicken thigh, chicken wing, tsukune (chicken meat balls), mushroom and cherry tomato. But not everything is about skewers! They also serve mains like an entire grilled squid ($11.80) and cold angel hair pasta with sakura ebi ($14.80). Definitely check them out to get the whole elevated Japanese comfort food experience!

9. What’s Pide

What’s Pide is a Korean joint that sells pide – a variation of Turkish pita bread, but fluffier. The pide is cut down the middle to create a hot pocket to put ingredients in, forming a sandwich of sorts. They start from $6.50 each, and it is an extra $4 to make it a set meal. The ‘best dishes’ listed on their website are the garlic relish chicken pide, bulgogi pide, jalapeno bulgogi pide, and they even have a “what’s my otah” pide ($4.50) for their Singapore launch! It is unlike any other fast food in Singapore so you should definitely try it out for yourself!

10. Penguin’s Kitchen

Thai food is a popular cuisine in Singapore, but it is rare to find a restaurant that serves authentic Thai food. Penguin’s Kitchen is one that serves good and affordable Thai cuisine. Enjoy stir-fried hot basil pork rice ($8) that is flavourful and fragrant, and green curry ($10) that pairs well with rice and other dishes. The deep fried garlic pork ($12) is also a favourite for its crispy exterior and tender meat. If you are looking for authentically good Thai food, look no further!
